Birthday memorial honors boy thrown off Yaquina Bay Bridge

Posted: Updated:

A day before he would have turned seven years old, a photo of London McCabe and a bunch of bright yellow balloons mark the area where the little boy took his final breaths.

Police said London McCabe's mother, Jillian McCabe, threw the boy over the side of the Yaquina Bay Bridge in November 2014, then called 911 and told a dispatcher.

Emergency personnel later recovered London McCabe's body from Yaquina Bay.

Sunday, the boy's grandmother, Reitha McCabe, put the photo and balloons on the bridge, saying she wanted his birthday to be an occasion of joy and happiness. The yellow balloons carry a special significance.

"If it was yellow, he wore it, he played with it," Reitha McCabe said. "He loved yellow hats, shirts, his favorite toy was a yellow lion. He carried lion with him every place."

The boy's mother, Jillian McCabe, is still in custody at the Lincoln County Jail, facing murder and manslaughter charges.

Jillian McCabe's trial is set for August 2016.
