PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

An estimated 16,000 people took part in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure Sunday at Portland's Tom McCall Waterfront Park.

Participants included cancer survivors as well as friends and family of those who have faced the disease.

Judy Brown, who survived cancer, said the race is a great way to reach out to others and help lift their spirits.

"It's amazing because everyone has a different story," Brown said. "And when we share our stories, we help support each other. You never know when it's your turn to be able to have a story like us."

The event's organizers aimed to raise $2.5 million at the event.

Organizers said the money raised goes to local support programs and to breast cancer research.
