LINN COUNTY, OR (KPTV) -

A mountain climber died in a 500-foot fall on Three Fingered Jack on Sunday.

Another climber called 911 at 2:10 p.m. to report a man had fallen.

Investigators said Corey Franklin, 23, and Tyler Heilman, 22, both from Bend, were climbing the northwest side of Three Fingered Jack near the summit at an elevation of 7,700 feet.

Heilman, who was not roped in, fell 500 to 600 feet and was killed, according to the Linn County Sheriff's Office.

Two other climbers heard Franklin calling for help and made the call to 911.

Linn County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue coordinated a search for Heilman with the Oregon Air National Guard. A National Guard helicopter crew located Heilman's body at 6:43 p.m.

Due to the approaching darkness, hazardous conditions and rugged terrain, the effort to recover his body was delayed until Monday.
