PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man stole luggage from sleeping travelers at Portland International Airport and hopped on the MAX train to get away before he was caught by police, according to the Port of Portland Police Department.

Investigators said a man, his girlfriend and their infant child were sleeping in the south end of the ticket lobby with their luggage at 7 a.m. Monday when a man reached around them and stole two of their bags.

The sleeping man woke up during the theft of the second bag and the suspect ran out of the airport. Police said the suspect dropped one of the bags and got on the outgoing MAX train.

Port of Portland police dispatchers contacted TriMet and asked that the train be held at the Gateway Transit Station. Officers arrived and detained a man matching the suspect's description.

According to a police report, Ian McMillian, 44, of Portland, denied stealing the bag. Officers said they reviewed airport video that showed McMillian committing the crime.

He was arrested on theft charges.

Police said McMillian's girlfriend was cooperative and returned the stolen bag, which McMillian had ransacked and placed in another bag.

Most of the stolen items were recovered and returned to the owner, officers said.
