Medical marijuana dispensaries getting ready to sell recreational pot

Posted: Updated:

On October 1, medical marijuana dispensaries will be allowed to sell recreational pot in Oregon and on Wednesday, the Portland City Council will vote on regulations to keep them in check.

Dispensaries like Cannabliss in Southeast Portland are getting ready to serve a lot more people and bring in a lot more product, but they want recreational users to know that medical clients will still be their top priority.

Cannabliss owner, Matthew Price, told FOX 12 he's going to have a separate entrance for medical users and recreational users.

On Wednesday, the City Council will vote to adopt rules and regulations for selling recreational pot, like hours of operation, security requirements, signage and checking ID's.

There are still a few more months until the OLCC starts offering licenses to shops that just want to sell recreational pot and since it became legal in July, legislators decided to let medical dispensaries get the ball rolling.

Price thinks it's a responsible way to introduce recreational pot to the community.

"You know, all it is is an adaptation. I think it was a really smart idea by the legislators to allow the medical shops to go in and start doing recreational early. We already have all the security measures and tracking measures in place. We have everything to be able to supply these people and help curtail the black market," said Price.

The City Council has held several town hall meetings to come up with the regulations and will vote to adopt the plan on Wednesday.
