A woman walking on the Oregon State University campus after midnight Wednesday was sexually assaulted, according to a report from the Oregon State Police.

The woman told officers she was walking between Waldo Hall to Arnold Dining Center when a man approached her, then assaulted her before fleeing.

The school sent an email to students Wednesday morning and said local police would be stepping up patrols around campus this week.

Some students said they always keep pepper spray with them while walking around campus.

"I make sure I always have it on when I leave cause, I’ve always been kind of nervous about walking by myself," freshman Treva Rice said.

The suspect was described as a white man in his 40s with a beard and grayish black hair.

This assault comes after an assault on Friday near campus. A woman said she woke up in the early morning hours to a man on top of her in her bed. She said the man was clothed, but rubbing up against her through her covers. After ten minutes, she was able to convince him to leave.

Police are not saying if this is the same man, or if these cases are related, but both attacks have this campus on edge.

"You should lock your door because it’s not as safe as everybody feels like it is," senior Kim Green said.

The investigation into the assault is being handled by the OSP University Area Command. Anyone with information on assault is asked to call 541-737-3010.

The OSU Department of Safety and the OSP also advises all OSU staff and students to sign up for the campus alert service, available at
