Man caught on camera placing explosive device in Lake Oswego mailbox

Posted: Updated:

FOX 12's Most Wanted was caught on camera placing an explosive device inside a man's mailbox in Lake Oswego.

The homeowner, Michael Silberbach, said this has happened five times in the Glenmorrie neighborhood in the last two and a half years and he is fed-up.

Silberbach has had a small collection of mailboxes gathering in his garage the last couple of years.

"It started out as a kids prank, and it's become a cat and mouse game for them, because I continue to put up cheap mailboxes in."

Whoever is behind this is putting some kind of explosive in his mailbox.

"We think they're using some kind of powerful commercial fireworks and they wrap it in multiple layers of duct tape. That's how you make a bomb or an IED."

Silberbach can't understand why he's being targeted and decided to get creative. With the help of his son, who's an engineer, they put together a much stronger mailbox.

"It's .25" steel. It's made out of half pipe. It weighs about 60 pounds."

Silberbach also installed surveillance cameras to catch the person responsible.

On Sept. 15 the cameras caught a man lighting something, stuffing it in the mailbox and running away.

Silberbach is hoping the video will help police catch the person responsible and hopes it all ends soon.

"I just want this to end. I think this is time for this young man to grow up."

He is offering a $200 reward for information leading to an arrest.

FOX 12 checked with Lake Oswego Police who said the suspect could be facing criminal mischief charges if arrested.

If you know anything about the crime, please call Lake Oswego Police (503) 635-0250.
