GASTON, OR (KPTV) -

A driver was critically injured after crossing the centerline of Highway 47 south of Forest Grove and crashing head-on into a semi, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to the highway just north of Gaston at 8:10 a.m.

Investigators said a 2005 BMW X5 SUV was heading north when it crossed into the oncoming lane and struck a semi hauling corn.

The truck then struck a northbound 2010 Subaru Legacy and rolled over on top of it, according to police.

The driver of the SUV, Sarah Riffel, 27, of Colton, was flown to a Portland hospital with injuries described as life-threatening.

The driver of the Subaru, Joy Gephart, 34, of Yamhill, was taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The truck driver, Richard Bessey, 54, of Dallas, was taken by private vehicle to the hospital and he was expected to be OK, according to police.

The highway was closed for more than five hours for the investigation, as crews also worked to cleanup the spilled corn and around 50 gallons of spilled diesel.

Police believe several people witnessed the crash and stopped at the scene, but left prior to speaking with troopers. Anyone with information about this crash is asked to call Oregon State Police at 503-375-3555.
