Hobby shop thief makes out with over $10K in drones

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Hours after a masked thief broke into Remote Control Hobbies on Northeast Halsey and 124th, owner Kathy McKay said her heart still races when she looks over the surveillance video.

She can see clearly how the thief used a crowbar to smash a  window and break into her store, stealing its most expensive items, hobby drones that sell upwards of $1,000.

Kathy can't see the thief's face, since he wears what looks like a Halloween skull mask, but she can see him go to work. In roughly two minutes he has helped himself to $10,000 worth of her most expensive hobby equipment.

Kathy thinks she recognizes the thief's long, lanky body, though she couldn't identify the burglar.

"The weird thing is, whoever this is, they were probably in the store to case it," she said.

Kathy has owned Remote Control Hobbies for two years. There are 16 security cameras inside the store and signs that say, "Smile, you're on camera."

She also recently moved the expensive hobby drones behind the counter, to prevent people from just walking out the store with them.

All that was not enough to stop the masked thief, who may have had one or more accomplices.

From the surveillance video, it looks like he may be passing some of the goods outside the window he smashed to someone else. And a witness in the area reports seeing a medium-sized SUV speeding away from the scene with several people inside the car.

Kathy says she will add security cameras outside the store now and maybe even put bars on the windows to try to prevent another costly break-in.
