A 2-year-old boy shot himself in the leg with his father's gun at a home in Polk County, according to deputies.

Deputies said it happened at 2 p.m. Thursday on the 2000 block of Mistletoe Road.

Investigators said the child's parents drove him to the hospital, where he was taken by air ambulance to a Portland area trauma center.

Polk County deputies said the boy's father, 26-year-old Mark Toma, was cleaning several guns when he stepped away for a moment and left a loaded .40 caliber handgun on a coffee table within reach of his son.

Investigators said the boy grabbed the gun and pulled the trigger. The bullet struck him in the leg, continued through his leg and went into another room, according to deputies.

Nobody else was injured.

Deputies said he was in serious, but stable, condition Thursday.

The investigation is ongoing and no other information was released by the sheriff's office Thursday.
