On Saturday, Sept. 26, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration will hold the 10th National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

The Take-Backs will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time. About 5,000 collection sites will be open around the nation to return all unwanted, unneeded or expired prescription drugs for safe and anonymous disposal.

Collection sites in every local community can be found by going to or by calling 800-882-9539.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day addresses vital public safety and health issues.

Rates of prescription dug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as well as the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

According to a release, studies show that many abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends.

Many people do not know how to properly dispose of their unused medications, often flushing them down the toilet or throwing them away which poses safety and environmental hazards.

The DEA's previous nine nationwide Take-Back events have collected 4,823,251 pounds of drugs.
