Judge: Kelso teachers' union in contempt of court, fined $2K a day

KELSO, WA (KPTV) -

A judge Friday morning found the Kelso teachers' union in contempt of court for continuing to defy a judge's order to return to work.

The judge ruled the union must pay $2,000 for every day the teachers continue to strike.

Kelso teachers have been on strike over stalled contract negotiations since Sept. 16.

A judge ruled last week that the strike is illegal and the teachers must return to work, but the Kelso Education Association voted to defy that order and continue striking.

The school district and teachers' union had hoped to hammer out a deal late Thursday night and avoid the hearing, but the two sides have yet to come to an agreement.

The teachers' union said bargaining with the district would continue at 2 p.m. Friday.

Friday afternoon, parents took to the district offices looking for the latest from the superintendent about the strike.

Superintendent Glen Gelbrich did not come out to address the crowd, but rather brought back four parents to discuss the situation.
