PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Emergency crews responded to a crash between a man in a wheelchair and a pickup on southeast 82nd Avenue and Clinton Street around 12:25 a.m. Saturday, according to police.

Officials say the man in the wheelchair, Ronald Shapland, 39, was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. An Oregon Health & Science University spokeswoman confirmed Shapland later died.

The driver of the pickup, George Bute, 68, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

Investigators said Shapland drove his motorized wheelchair southbound into the northbound lanes on 82nd Avenue, directly into the path of the 2000 Dodge Dakota driven by Bute.

Based on witness information, officers believe Shapland may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

Bute was not impaired and was taken home after the investigation was complete at the scene.

No citations have been issued, and the crash remains under investigation.
