Drive-by shooting in downtown Portland leads to I-84 police chase

Posted: Updated:

A drive-by shooting in downtown Portland led to a police chase on Interstate 84 and four people being taken into custody, according to investigators.

Portland Police Bureau officers responded to Southwest Fourth Avenue and Burnside Street at 1:23 a.m. Sunday.

They learned someone in a silver SUV fired at another vehicle in the area. Neither vehicle remained at the scene.

A short time later, officers spotted the SUV heading eastbound on Interstate 84 and attempted to stop it. The driver sped away and led police on a chase that lasted until the SUV exited the highway at Northeast 181st Avenue and stopped at Northeast 208th Place and Halsey Street, according to officers.

Police said the driver and a passenger ran away.

Gresham Police Department SWAT responded to assist with the search. After several hours, the driver and passenger were located.

Police said two other people in the SUV were also taken into custody at the time the vehicle came to a stop.

The names of the four suspects have not been released by police at this time.

Detectives said the original drive-by shooting is believed to be gang-related. The Gang Enforcement Team is continuing to investigate.

There are no reports of injuries in connection to these incidents.
