11 sheep killed in suspected cougar attack near Canby

OREGON CITY, OR (KPTV) -

An Oregon City woman believes a cougar is responsible for killing 11 of her sheep, bringing the number of animals killed in the last two weeks to more than 20.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has been following up on several cougar sightings in the Canby area, setting traps and snares in hopes of catching the animal, but so far those efforts have been unsuccessful.

Karen Kenagy said she got a phone call informing her of the dead sheep on Saturday. She has since moved the survivors to another piece of property near Hubbard.

Kenagy said 10 of the sheep she lost were pregnant ewes, worth at least $500 per animal.

“They were some of my best sheep.  And the other thing is they wind up being your friends, and that’s what’s so hard,” said Kenagy.

A spokesman with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife confirmed a cougar is suspected in the attack on Kenagy’s livestock, and that efforts to capture the animal will continue,.
