Parents were notified about a student with whooping cough at Wilson High School.

The Multnomah County Health Department and Portland Public Schools confirmed there is one case of pertussis, better known as whooping cough, at the school.

The contagious respiratory infection can cause spasms of severe coughing that can last for weeks. Infants and young children can become very sick from it.

Parents received a letter advising them to monitor their children for cold-like symptoms or an irritating cough. If the cough worsens over seven or more days, parents are asked to keep their children home from school and let their doctor know they may have been exposed to whooping cough.

Parents were also asked to review and update their children's immunizations.
