Oregon Senate Democrats elect new majority leader

SALEM, OR (AP) -

Democrats in the Oregon Senate have elected a new majority leader.

Lawmakers chose Sen. Ginny Burdick of Portland for the Senate's number two post on Monday. Burdick's appointment represents a rare change of course in the middle of an election cycle.

Burdick replaces Sen. Diane Rosenbaum of Portland, who had held the position since 2011. Rosenbaum will take on the position of president pro tem, a largely ceremonial role that presides over Senate sessions when the President, Peter Courtney, is unable.

As majority leader, Burdick will take over the Democrats' campaign efforts, such as fundraising and candidate recruitment. She previously oversaw the Legislature's preparations to implement legal marijuana and was chair of the Senate Finance Committee, which oversees tax policy.
