Disabled woman has two important bikes stolen from her house

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A woman who gets around in a wheelchair says a thief not only stole her bikes, they stole something more personal, her independence.

Wink Harner doesn’t let the fact that she can’t get around like most people prevent her from being active.

She stays active by riding around her Centennial neighborhood in Southeast Portland on her custom tricycles.

Late last week, someone stole them, and they aren’t cheap, the cost to replace them is nearly $4,000.

Harner uses them for physical therapy, and is the only way she is able to get exercise.

“I got up Friday morning and the gate was wide open, the lock was broken and both bikes were gone,” says Harner.

The person behind the theft broke a lock and the bikes that were on the back porch of her home.

Born with a congenital birth defect, which prevents her from getting around, she has screws in every joint of her body. She described these two bikes as her independence.

Harner said she did file a claim with her insurance company, but it won’t be enough to replace both tricycles.

She also says her neighborhood is very close and she’s hoping that if anyone saw anything out there last week, that they call
police.
