BEND, OR (AP) -

Horses at a facility near Bend are eating their fill of tons of carrots as workers try to find the vegetables new homes.

The Bend Bulletin reports Joan Steelhammer agreed to the donation on Friday without knowing what 44,000 pounds of carrots would look like. The 22 tons delivered to the Equine Outreach horse rescue filled a 53-foot semitrailer as much as five feet deep.

A truck carrying the carrots had crashed, making them unfit for human consumption.

Volunteer Gene Storm says the ranch's 80 horses have been chomping through the massive stock, with animal owners accepting invitations to reduce the pile as well.

The roughly 4 tons left is still more than the ranch can consume. Storm says carrots will probably be available for a few days.
