PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

Kenneth Martin never thought he’d see this day. But on Wednesday, the manager of Foster Buds found himself preparing to sell recreational pot at the medical marijuana dispensary.

“I’m super excited,” said Martin. “There’s a lot of people that are super excited too. I can’t wait.”

Adults 21 and over can purchase marijuana flowers, plants and seeds starting October 1 at dispensaries like Foster Buds. The shops can only provide edibles to medical marijuana patients.

Foster Buds planned to open at midnight. Martin said they’ve ordered plenty of product in hopes of avoiding shortages that plagued recreational pot stores that opened after it became legal in Washington.

Not only do they want enough for new customers, they want their medical marijuana patients to get what they need.

“They’re all concerned because they think that all their flower is going to get bought up and everything else like Vancouver,” he said. “But we don’t see that happening at all.”

Hours before recreational pot went on sale, the Portland city council approved regulations for recreational pot licenses and sales, including hours of operation and security requirements. They asked city staff to clarify details about some of the regulations.

For example, the council approved creating a 1,000 foot buffer between medical and retail establishments, but wants to protect current dispensaries serving medical patients.

The Oregon Liquor Control Commission is still a few months away from issuing licenses for recreational pot stores. The OLCC anticipates the first of those opening next fall.

Medical marijuana dispensaries can sell recreational pot through December 31, 2016. It is still illegal for people to smoke pot in public or to drive under the influence of marijuana.
