A woman was killed in a crash after pulling out in front of a garbage truck on Highway 18 in Sheridan, according to police.

Emergency crews responded to the intersection with Red Prairie Road at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Investigators said a 1994 Ford Escort was heading north on Red Prairie Road when it pulled out in front of a 2004 Peterbilt garbage truck traveling eastbound on the highway.

The truck collided with the car.

The driver of the car, Mary Rickard, 55, of Grand Ronde, was taken by air ambulance to a Portland hospital where she later died, according to police.

The driver of the garbage truck, 23-year-old Antonio Chavez of McMinnville, was not injured and cooperated with the investigation.

Oregon State Police said Rickard failed to yield the right of way to the truck.

The highway was closed for more than three hours while investigators were at the scene.
