Deputies, FBI search apartment possibly linked to UCC shooter

ROSEBURG, OR (KPTV) -

Sheriff's Deputies and the FBI surrounded the Saddle Butte Apartments in Winchester Thursday afternoon. The apartments could be connected to Umpqua Community College shooting.

The sign of FBI vehicles were obvious signs something was wrong to people living in the apartments.

"I came home and I saw the police officers putting the tape around and I'm wondering what's going on," said Bronte Hart.

Neighbors knew something terrible had happened just two miles away; a mass shooting at UCC.

"Scared the hell out of me. I was working and my neighbor told me it was going on and when I came home I saw all the plastic around," said Velvet Marks.

As the day went on, information started coming out. It became more and more likely the man who lived in apartment 12 could be connected to the shooting.

The Saddle Butte Apartments are the last known address for suspected shooter Chris Harper-Mercer, 26.

"I saw him in the evening. I take my dog for a walk and I said hi to him and he seemed nice," said Marks.

But other neighbors saw a man who seemed tightly wound.

"I think he's right above us actually. I heard a lot of commotion or something one night, there was some fighting going on up there. And he yelled at me and my husband a lot because we were smoking and he didn't want us to smoke up there," said Hart.

The Sheriff's Department, State Police and the FBI came to investigate the apartment.

They didn't tell neighbors what they were looking for, but people that live at the apartments had to wonder.

"I have a 4 month old son and that is insane to know, that if it's true, that a murderer was above me. That's scary," said Hart.

Investigators have not told FOX 12 what they are looking for in the apartment or if it is related to the shooting.
