Coos Bay-area schools close due to non-specific threat

Posted: Updated:
COOS BAY, OR (KPTV) -

Several schools in the Coos Bay area, including Southwestern Oregon Community College, closed for the day Friday due to a non-specific threat of a shooting like the one that took place Thursday at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg.

SWOCC posted on Facebook that police notified the college of a threat of a shooting at a Coos County school Friday.

The Coos County Sheriff's Office said in a press release that someone reported seeing the threat posted online. Investigators determined the threat was posted before Thursday's shooting and therefore wasn't a credible threat and deputies passed that information on to local law enforcement agencies.

While there was no specific threat to SWOCC, officials decided to close the entire campus at 9 a.m.

The World newspaper in Coos Bay reported Coquille and Myrtle Point schools were also sending students home for the day.
