PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

It was the first weekend Oregonians of age could buy recreational pot from medical marijuana dispensaries, and hundreds celebrated by attending a cannabis competition in Southeast Portland.

On Sunday, the Washington-based company Dope Magazine held its first cannabis competition in the state of Oregon since its inception in 2012.

The event is normally held in Washington, but for the first time, it was held in Portland, bringing in 1,000 attendees.

Organizers say it was the highest number of people on record to ever attend their competition event.

Many who attended said they were there to celebrate the fact Oregonians can now buy recreational pot legally at medical marijuana dispensaries.

"I’m just here to celebrate rec finally passing and people being able to have safe access to medicine," attendee Jaime said.

Others said the event brought the cannabis community together in a way they never could before.

"These events give us an opportunity to network like we’ve never been able to before, and the fact it's legal and the fact we can do it openly, its just going to take it to the next level," Nicci Johnson said.

Johnson added those who will start buying recreational pot for medicinal use will now know exactly where it comes from.

"Being able to get organic product knowing what the content is, and the that’s a huge sigh of relief especially for our med patients who have had limited access til now," Johnson said.

People 21 and over can buy marijuana plants, seeds and flowers from dispensaries. However, when it comes to edibles, dispensaries can only sell them to medical marijuana patients for now.
