Umpqua Community College campus reopens following deadly shooting

ROSEBURG, OR (KPTV) -

It's an emotional day for students, faculty and staff of Umpqua Community College Monday as campus reopens following last week's deadly shooting.

Campus has been closed and student activities have been suspended since a gunman opened fire in a classroom Thursday, taking the lives of nine people before killing himself.

Five victims of the shooting are still in the hospital recovering from their injuries. Three of those victims are at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield. Two are in fair condition and one remains in critical condition.

Two victims are still being treated at Mercy Medical Center in Roseburg. Cheyeanne Fitzgerald was upgraded to fair condition Sunday. Doctors didn't provide an update on Chris Mintz's condition.

Though campus will be be open Monday, classes don't resume until the following Monday, Oct. 12.

The college will be offering grief sharing services in the campus cafeteria all week, from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Community Health Alliance also offers 24-hour services at its hotline, 541-440-3532 or 1-800-866-9780.

The college recommends that anyone wishing to donate to the UCC community do so via the Umpqua Community College Foundation or the Greater Douglas United Way.
