Chris Mintz has been described as a hero after trying to stop the shooter who killed nine people at Umpqua Community College Thursday, and now the community around him is showing its thanks.

Mintz was shot seven times Thursday, when his family said he was trying to block the door of a classroom to prevent the shooter from entering.

A GoFundMe page was started Friday to help Mintz with medical and recovery costs, and as of Monday afternoon it had grown to nearly $770,000.

On the Mintz page, organizers are directing those wanting to donate to give to the funds set up for those killed in the attack, as well other injured. They also are highlighting a fund started by the Greater Douglas United Way to help victims.

In addition to the funds that have been raised, a petition was started on Change.org, requesting President Obama award Mintz the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his actions. Started Friday, the petition already has over 93,000 supporters.
