Portland Public Schools take action towards preventing gun violence

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

At a school board meeting on Monday night Portland Public Schools laid out steps they plan on taking to prevent gun violence. This is in direct response to the UCC shooting last Thursday.

The school board plans to work with many elements including educating children about gun safety, keeping guns off of school grounds, providing early access to mental health care and continuing with school counseling services.

The district also requested that Oregon lawmakers enact laws that require a permit to buy a hand gun as well as a permit to keep a gun if they currently have one.

PPS would also like to see stricter laws on concealed and open carry permits, purchase waiting periods, and the sale of all semi-automatic weapons.
