GRESHAM, OR (KPTV) -

A woman hit by a car while she was walking in a crosswalk Monday has died.

Elizabeth Irma Kemble, 46, of Portland was initially reported to have sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries after being hit by a car driven by Jacob Walters, 27, also of Portland. Her condition worsened, though, and she died just after 7:00 p.m. Monday.

According the a report from the Gresham Police Department, Kemble was trying to cross Burnside Street at 181st Avenue just after 8:00 a.m. when she was hit by Walter’s car that was headed east.

The scene is still under investigation by the East County Vehicular Crimes Team. The initial reports and witness statements indicate that Walter was smoking marijuana just before the accident, though it is unknown at this time how much of a factor that consumption was to the crash occurring.

Walter was booked on charges of assault in the fourth degree, reckless driving and reckless endangerment and sent to the Multnomah County Detention Center, but has been released.
