VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A Vancouver man is seriously hurt after a fireworks accident that happened on Sunday night.

Vancouver Fire Department said the 27-year-old man was lighting off fireworks at West 21st and Harney Streets.

According to the fire department, one of the fireworks did not go off at first, so the man went to examine it. That's when the firework went off and hit him directly in the neck.

"It is sad and senseless in a lot of ways. These are avoidable mistakes if you can be safe, if you can be safe with explosives I guess. The other question Vancouver needs to deal with is if this is something we want to happen more often or less often," said Eileen Cowen, who hear th firework go off.

The man is currently in a hospital recovery from his injuries. His name has not yet been released.

On Monday, the City of Vancouver took action against fireworks and unanimously approved a fireworks ban.

That fireworks ban will go into effect in 2017.
