A teenager convicted for his role in the killing of his great-grandmother learned his fate in court on Tuesday.

Prosecutors hoped the jury would convict 19-year-old Joda Cain of aggravated murder for the bludgeoning death of 71-year-old Jacqueline Bell inside her Cedar Mill home back in 2013.

Last week, the jury acquitted Cain on the murder charge and found him guilty of first degree manslaughter.

In court on Tuesday, Cain appeared emotionless as the judge handed down a 10 year prison sentence, the maximum allowed under measure eleven guidelines.

The judge said he would have given Cain 15 to 20 years, at the very least, if he could.

FOX 12 spoke to Bell's son following the sentencing.

"I was very disappointed with the jury. I just think they dropped the ball. I don't want to seem like a zealot, but I think he deserved a much harder sentence," said Alex Bell.

Alex Bell said in 2013, his mother had fought to gain custody of Cain, who had been living in Kansas. He said she hoped to give him a better life, and to keep him out of trouble.

Two months later, prosecutors said Cain had convinced his cousin, 19-year-old Micus Ward, to travel from Kansas to Oregon to help kill Jacqueline Bell.

Hours after her body was discovered, Oregon State Police arrested both Cain and Ward in Eastern Oregon, following a high speed chase. OSP said the teens were driving Bell's car and had the her jewelry and credit cards in their possession.

Ward is awaiting trial on aggravated murder charges.

Jacqueline Bell's friends and loved ones said they're struggling to overcome a tragic loss. They said everyone who knew her, loved her.

They also said it's a tragic twist of fate that she was killed by the young man she was trying desperately to help.
