ROSEBURG, OR (KPTV) -

The staff at Wildlife Safari are remembering a victim of Thursday's UCC shooting as a beloved co-worker and friend.

18-year-old Lucas Eibel was a volunteer, junior zookeeper at Wildlife Safari in Winston, just south of Roseburg.

Workers at Wildlife Safari said he absolutely loved animals, he had a special connection with him and on Tuesday, they said this very special young man will be so missed.

"Lucas was just such an amazing kid. He would come in ready to do any task that was assigned to him. He was so grounded and even keeled, which made him especially good to work with the animals," said Leila Goulet.

Education Director Leila Goulet worked with Lucas for a few months over the summer. She said he fed the animals, cleaned their enclosures and took them to public events to educate people.

"I think number one, we have to remember to celebrate his life. You know, when someone passes, we seem to remember all the negatives and all the bad stuff that happened around it. But I think the best thing is to celebrate his life and all the accomplishments he had and all the people he affected."

Lucas Eibel's family asked that if a baby animal is born at Wildlife Safari soon, they'd like it to be named after Lucas.

Wildlife Safari staff plans on doing just that.
