Police: Man carrying meth, heroin drops gun while running from officers

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A man carrying meth and heroin dropped his gun as he attempted to run away from officers in southeast Portland, according to police.

Gang Enforcement Team officers initiated a traffic stop at Southeast 130th and Powell Boulevard at 12:11 a.m. Wednesday.

Police said the driver attempted to speed away and pulled into the parking lot of an apartment complex.

The driver got out and ran away from his car, dropping a handgun as he ran, according to investigators.

The suspect, identified as 36-year-old Lionell Hayes, was quickly taken into custody.

Officers said they discovered he was carrying small amounts of heroin and methamphetamine.

Hayes was booked in the Multnomah County Jail on charges of felon in possession of a firearm, possession of a loaded firearm, attempt to elude on foot, possession of heroin, possession of meth and driving while suspended.
