Portland City Council met to discuss high rent prices, homelessness

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

On Wednesday, the Portland City Council discussed the homeless situation and high rent prices.

Mayor Charlie Hales officially declared the city in a state of emergency.

In the meeting, Commissioner Dan Saltzman pushed for a proposal that would require a 90 day eviction period, along with a law that would make sure there were no evictions without a cause.

Mostly everyone at the meeting agreed there was a problem with the city's high rent but what will leaders do about it?

One from the Community Alliance of Tenants drew cheers for his impassioned speech.

"How long would it take you to move if you received a no-cause termination notice tomorrow? Now imagine if you had a bad credit from a foreclosure, medical debt or student loans would you qualify?"

The City Council will continue discussing the issue to come up with solutions.
