Police union launches campaign urging City Council to increase staffing

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Portland Police Association said there are not enough officers to keep the city safe, and now the group is trying to send a strong message to the Portland City Council with a billboard.

PPA launched a campaign called 'Having Enough Police Matters.'

Billboards went up around Portland to educate the public about the dangerously low staffing levels in the Portland Police Bureau.

PPA said staff levels are dwindling even as the city continues to grow.

The Police Bureau is around 700 officers short of national staffing benchmarks.

"Inadequate staffing in the Police Bureau is hurting our communities and putting all of us at risk," said Daryl Turner, President of the PPA. "Nothing is more basic to the livability of a city than public safety. We need City Council to take immediate action to fix this critical staffing shortage. Our City and our officers deserve better."

PPA said the community is paying the price with an increase in gun and gang violence. They also said there is an overall lack of services for the community and homeless population.
