Homelessness and high rent prices lead to a state of emergency in Portland

Posted: Updated:

Mayor Hales has declared a state of emergency in Portland due to the high rate of homelessness and increasing rent prices.

The state of emergency was declared during Wednesday’s city council meeting.

Commissioner Dan Saltzman pushed for a proposal that would require a 90-day eviction period.

The Commissioner also wants a law that would make sure there were no evictions ‘without a cause’.

Most people in the meeting agreed that there is a problem with the city’s high rent, but many questioned what the city of Portland can do about it.

The immediate goals of the emergency declaration will be to get all homeless veterans and women indoors by the end of the year and to provide supportive housing for people dealing with mental illness.

The council will continue to discuss the issue to come up with solutions.
