PENDLETON, OR (KPTV) -

A Gresham man was shot and killed by his father in an apparent hunting accident in Umatilla County, according to the sheriff's office.

Emergency crews responded to the scene near the Summit Guard Station cabin off of Forest Service Road 3113 at 6:24 p.m. Wednesday on a report of an accidental shooting.

Investigators said Louis Branze, 76, of Seaside, was deer hunting with his son, David Branze, 47, of Gresham.

Louis Branze said he fired a shot at a deer, according to the sheriff's office, and struck David Branze. Deputies said David Branze died as a result of the gunshot wound.

The incident happened in very rugged and steep terrain, so it took several hours for search and rescue teams to recover his body.

An autopsy is scheduled for later this week.

"At this point, the investigation is still underway and we will be working with the medical examiner's office to gather as much information as we can," said Sheriff Terry Rowan.
