Home Depot volunteers help renovate local veteran's home

VANCOUVER, WA (KPTV) -

A local disabled veteran just had some major renovations done on his home, thanks to a group of volunteers.

For the wounded warrior this act of kindness is much more than home repairs.

"I'm getting all the new appliances in the kitchen, a new dryer, new carpeting."

Richard Postell started the day with a long list of badly needed home improvements that he couldn't perform on his own.

"They're doing an extensive project. They're doing landscaping in my yard also."

Dozens of volunteers from Home Depot rolled up their sleeves and spent the whole day working on Richard's house in Vancouver.

Many of the repairs are aimed at eliminating dangers from his home.

"Mainly the concern is safety for veterans, because I've got a lot of disabilities and stuff."

Postell served in the Navy during the Vietnam war, earning two purple hearts and a medal from President Kennedy.

For volunteers, this work is a small way to say thank you.

"It kind of hits home a little more for my store. I have three kids serving, so again to be able to do the right thing in their eyes and do the right thing for those that have done so much for us," said Robert Tilton, Home Depot volunteer.

The home makeover is part of Home Depot's 5th annual Celebration of Service.

Postell said he's not just grateful on his own behalf.

"I can appreciate it for any veteran, see I want the veterans to know that we're being acknowledged."

People can get involved with Celebration of Service by taking a selfie.

Home Depot is inviting people to share their support for veterans by taking a selfie and posting it on social media with the hashtag 'service selfie.'

Each post counts towards a donation that Home Depot will make of up to $1 million towards veteran causes.
