Raise the Wage group gather signatures for OR ballot measure

Posted: Updated:

On Saturday, supporters in Portland, Hillsboro, Salem and Eugene gathered signatures for the ballot measure that will raise Oregon's minimum wage.

The ballot measure filed on September 28 would raise the minimum wage to $13.50 and would allow cities and counties to set their own wages.

The group Raise the Wage said Oregon's economy has doubled in size in the past few years and has made it very difficult for low wage workers to support their families.

They said one thing is clear, Oregonians need a raise in 2016.

"I want to see the working class rise a little bit more and not be worried whether you have to make a choice between food and medicine. Can we not get the medicine until next payday? Just the standard of living, it's not where it could be," said Raise the Wage volunteer Paul Raynor.

Raise the Wage group is a coalition of business owners, workers and community groups.
