Firefighters: Crafting heat gun on floor starts NW Portland apartment fire

Posted: Updated:

A crafting heat gun left on a hardwood floor started a fire at a northwest Portland apartment complex, according to firefighters.

Portland Fire & Rescue crews were called to the building at Northwest 14th and Lovejoy Street at 8:40 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters found smoke coming from a second-story window. The alarm system in the building had been activated, along with the sprinkler system.

Firefighters said the sprinklers slowed the progress of the fire.

Crews determined there were no potential victims in the complex and worked to remove the water to prevent property damage.

Crews used specialized water vacuums, squeegees, brooms and other tools to remove the water in a process called "salvage," according to Portland Fire & Rescue.

Firefighters also moved or tarped valuables such as photos, furniture, pianos and other irreplaceable personal items.

Investigators said the fire was started by a crafting heat gun left on the floor before the resident left the apartment, but it wasn't clear whether the heat gun was still on or not at the time due to the extent of the damage.
