SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

A man guilty of poisoning cats in Salem with antifreeze will spend 18 days in jail.

Antonio Ramos-Perez was found guilty on nine counts of first-degree animal abuse on Oct. 2. A judge found him not guilty on several other counts of first-degree aggravated animal abuse.

He was sentenced Monday.

Ramos-Perez was arrested in January after police received reports of numerous cats dying in the area of 6th Street Northwest and Rosemont Avenue.

The Willamette Valley Animal Hospital in Keizer performed necropsies on the dead animals and testing showed the presence of anti-freeze.

The Statesman Journal reported Ramos-Perez put antifreeze on a piece of meat and left it in a garbage can without a lid for several hours. He testified that once he saw cats going after it, he moved the container to a garbage can with a lid.

His lawyer said Ramos-Perez's intent wasn't malicious, but it occurred out of a lack of understanding, according to a Statesman Journal report.

According to court documents, the charge of animal abuse states the defendant "did unlawfully and recklessly cause physical injury to an animal." Aggravated animal abuse would mean he "did unlawfully and maliciously kill an animal."

According to court documents, many of the cats were less than 1 year old.

As part of his sentencing, Ramos-Perez received more than a year on probation and he is not allowed to own any animals or antifreeze.
