The Portland International Airport on Tuesday celebrated 75 years of service to people in Oregon and southwest Washington. The birthday festivities – which included free cupcakes and a sand sculpture – marked the dedication of the airport on Oct. 13, 1940.

"We are honored to be the gateway to your travels and your warm welcome home," said Port of Portland chief operating officer Vince Granato in a news release issued Tuesday. “Every day, we work with our partners – the Transportation Security Administration, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, airlines, concessionaires, transportation providers, and, of course, our travelers – to keep PDX America’s Best Airport."

The airport is also marking its 75th anniversary with a video history timeline and a new addition to its art collection: a 12-by-24-foot painting by regional artist Lynsee Sardell. Travelers and airport employees can help name the painting by submitting suggestions to NameThatArt@portofportland.com by Oct. 16.

In a video posted to the Port of Portland's YouTube channel last month, airport employees shared their favorite memories.
