SALEM, OR (KPTV) -

Melissa DiGrigorio helps people every day with her career as an ER nurse, but that care does not stop when she goes off the clock.

DiGrigorio has volunteered for the Children’s Cancer Association since 2009, and in those six years she has offered over 400 hours of friendship and mentoring to older children and teens facing incredible challenges.

For her great volunteer efforts, DiGrigorio was honored as a regional winner of the Oregon Governor’s Volunteer Awards, which recognize outstanding volunteers from across the state who improve their communities in a variety of ways.

As a Chemo Pal Mentor for the CCA, DiGrigorio has been a trusted adult friend, helping young patients through the difficult chemotherapy process and giving parents a hand so they can meet with doctors and family.

By being with children in their time of need, DiGrigorio and other Chemo Pals help bring a bit of normalcy to kids and parents.

In addition to her time volunteering as a Chemo Pal, DiGrigorio also has helped CCA as a fundraiser and by donating over 100 hours to the group’s development team.
