Portland man launches Kickstarter campaign for 'Emergency Sun' solar charger

Posted: Updated:

A Portland man has launched a Kickstarter campaign to produce a solar charger for cell phones and other devices that can be used during natural disasters.

It's called Emergency Sun.

Tony Kinkaid said his invention features a high-powered solar panel that charges rechargeable AA batteries.

It features a universal 12-volt plug to power digital devices.

"What we really need is to put a whole package together that anyone, anywhere can access," Kinkaid said. "Personally, it's to empower everyone and I think we all would like to see that."

The goal of the Kickstarter campaign is to raise $4,750 to fund the printing of custom circuit boards. Currently, Kinkaid builds the Emergency Sun units from the ground up.

More than $1,300 has been pledged to the project online thus far. For more, go to kickstarter.com.
