PORTLAND, OR (AP) -

Under a new rule, landlords in Portland will have to give more notice when raising rent or evicting residents without cause.

The City Council voted Wednesday to require landlords to give 90-day notice to renters if the rent will increase by 5 percent or more. They will also have to provide that much notice if evicting someone without cause.

Currently, most landlords only need to give 30 days notice.

If the landlord doesn't provide required notice, he or she could owe tenants up to three months rent in addition to damages and attorney fees.

The council approved the change unanimously. It takes effect next month.
