Group of ZooTeen volunteers meet Jane Goodall at Oregon Youth Summit

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A team of 11 Oregon ZooTeen volunteers had an opportunity to meet world-renowned primatologist and conservationist Jane Goodall at the Oregon Youth Summit on Thursday.

The Oregon Youth Summit is a meeting to honor environmental service by young people throughout the state.

The summit was held at David Douglas High School this year, and students had the opportunity to share their environmental projects with teachers and other students from around the state.

Coral Bailey, Sunshine Bender, Coby Captein, Sprout Chinn, Kelsey Crowell, Reece France, Hanna Hansen, Mary Knox, Bridgette McCarthy, Ellen Moore and Andrew Plasker represented the ZooTeens during the event.

Many of these projects, including the ZooTeens’ were conducted as part of the Roots and Shoots, the Jane Goodall Institute’s environmental and humanitarian youth program.

The teens decided they wanted to “inspire our local youth to take action in conservation efforts in our own community,” so they developed a curriculum for a two-day outreach project at Montclair Elementary School in Beaverton.

The outreach project curriculum included videos, a conservation coloring sheet, and a craft in which kids used recycled egg cartons to construct planters and seed native Northwest wildflowers.

At the end of the second day, the students each wrote a pledge on a Popsicle stick, one thing they would do to help bears, and placed it in their planters to take home.

“I am so proud of what our ZooTeens accomplished, and thrilled that they had this opportunity to meet Dr. Goodall,” said Kayla McCurry, the zoo’s youth volunteer coordinator. “Our emphasis with these projects is that they are teen-led and teen-driven. It took a lot of hard work and evening meetings, but they came together and made all the details happen.”
