THE DALLES, OR (KPTV) -

A 70-year-old woman was arrested after police said she stabbed her husband to death in a care home for veterans in The Dalles.

Police responded to the Oregon Veterans' Home at 700 Veterans Drive at 4:10 p.m. Sunday on reports of a stabbing.

James Wilkerson, 67, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Wasco County Major Crime Team was called out to assist with the investigation. Police said Wilkerson's wife, 70-year-old Esther Wilkerson, was arrested and booked at the Northern Oregon Regional Corrections Facility on the charge of murder.

A possible motive in this case has not been released by police.

According to court documents, Esther Wilkerson "knew and had reason to know of the particular vulnerability of James Wilkerson by reason of his physical disability and diminished mental capacity which increased the harm caused by the offense."

The Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs said James Wilkerson served for more than 20 years in the United States Navy, including service in Vietnam.

According to the Oregon Veterans' Home website, the facility provides 24-hour long-term skilled nursing and rehabilitative care for honorably discharged veterans, their spouses and parents who had a child die while serving in the U.S. military.

In a statement released Monday, director Cameron Smith said the other residents at the Oregon Veterans' Home in The Dalles are safe and support will be provided for them onsite.
