PBOT to add diagonal crosswalk downtown

PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

The Portland Bureau of Transportation is planning on installing traffic lights at what was a four-way stop, but the most intriguing change will be what’s called a “pedestrian scramble.”  Simply put, the intersection will feature two diagonal crosswalks.

“The cars will go, and then the pedestrians will go in the different directions, and it will be a much more orderly movement,” said Dylan Rivera, a spokesman for PBOT.

Rivera said the change will allow the lights at the new intersection will be synced up with Burnside, helping move traffic through the area in a more fluid manner.

Along with normal, conventional crosswalks, pedestrians would have the option of walking corner to corner, with traffic in each direction stopped for a full light cycle.

Rivera said the changes to the intersection should be finished in time for the busy holiday shopping season.
