PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

A Portland man's morning commute to work took a scary turn when he said someone fired a gun at him.

Kevin Kowitz works for a construction company in NE Portland located right next to a homeless camp.

Kowitz said he was arriving at work Wednesday morning when a brief encounter with a homeless person ended in gunfire.

"I turned around and faced off to him and he asked me a couple questions and I knew he was a homeless guy and I told him to keep walking and I pulled into my parking spot at the office, and next thing you know he's looking right at me and pops off two shots. I just bolted."

Kowitz was not hurt and he immediately called 911.

Police were able to arrest the suspect, Lance Wingert, 32, a short time later and confirm he is homeless.

Kowitz work's for Payne Construction along the Columbia Slough. The company's owner told FOX 12 the area has been a haven for illegal dumping, drug dealing, prostitution, and more recently, homeless camping.

"You're allowing them to live here and do what they want and someone like myself, a taxpayer and works hard is being shot at, well somebody needs to do something," said Kowitz.

Kowitz said his company's owner has written numerous letters to the Portland Mayor and Police Bureau asking them to do something about the transient camp.

They are hoping what happened Wednesday morning adds some pressure.

As for the suspect, he is facing numerous charges of felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon, discharging a firearm in the city, possession of a loaded firearm, menacing, recklessly endangering another person and disorderly conduct in the second degree.
