Local furniture bank running low on supplies, needs help from public

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

It's one of the only furniture banks in Oregon and Southwest Washington but the need is so great that the shelves are nearly empty.

The Community Warehouse is on NE MLK Jr. Blvd and there's also a second location in Tualatin.

Families go to Community Warehouse to get furniture and household items like kitchen utensils, blankets and pillows, and other items they couldn't otherwise afford.

Unfortunately, right now all of the shelves are almost empty.

In just the past two weeks, more than 100 families have come in for help and they come for a lot of reasons.

They are victims of domestic violence starting out on their own, or people overcoming substance abuse and homelessness or simply struggling to make ends meet. Many of the people who come in have children.

Maria Del Low and her husband have three young girls, they've lived in Portland for 15 years and he works full-time.

Del Low said it is still hard for them to make it, so they came in to the Community Warehouse about three months ago and she said the warehouse changed their lives.

This time of year the need always spikes as families try to find housing before the holidays and things like twin mattresses for the kids are especially scarce.

Community Warehouse is turning to the public for help, asking for any donation people can make, of furnishings, time or financial support, because it all goes a long way.
