A 74-year-old McMinnville man survived falling down a ravine and survived being down there for a day.

FOX 12 spoke with local volunteers who helped rescue the the man.

David Hostetler is in the hospital in critical condition.

The teens who helped find him said they're surprised he survived the fall.

"He took a very long fall. It was very steep and lots of tree branches, so it was great that he was still alive," said Heather Rawlinson.

Hostetler was reported missing on Saturday morning, and there was no sign of him until Monday when some hunters found his car in a remote part of the forest in Tillamook County.

On Tuesday, the Washington County Search and Rescue Explorer volunteers went into action to find him. The group volunteers to help find missing people or locate evidence from crime scenes.

After nearly five hours of searching, they spotted Hostetler. He was hurt but alive.

For some of the 'explorers' it was their first rescue mission.

"It was my first search and my first big experience, so I got pretty lucky to be with the team I was," said Joshua Martwick.

It was exhilarating. Once we found him, I didn't want to leave his side. When we were burritoing him up and lifting him up the hill, I just tried to help as much as I can," said Heather Rawlinson.

FOX 12 also spoke with some of Hostetler's friends, they said he has had some medical problems in the past, but they're not sure if that could have somehow contributed to what happened and where he ended up.
